Logan Family Photographer

I see it all the time as a Logan family photographer with the clients I serve, that figuring out what to wear for family photos is one of the reasons people put off planning their session. I'm here to make your life easier and your photos perfect for you to hang on your wall for years to come.

  1. Dress Mom first. This is the first tip because mom is usually the one planning the photos and the one who cares the most about them. Having mom get her outfit set first is key. Picking a dress or blouse and pants that you feel great in from all angles (use that mirror at home) will give you a jumping off point to coordinate everyone else from.
  2. Coordinate not match. If mom is wearing a floral dress with dark blues, greens, purples, choose one of those colors to put your hubby in a button up or sweater of that color. That way it's coordinating and makes sense to the eye but isn't two same color shirts matchy matching.
  3. Pattern, solids, texture, pop of color and neutral base. Organizing your family with these things in mind. You want a balance of all of them. If you think about a group and every person had a different pattern on, it would be too distracting to your eye. And everyone in a solid black shirt would be boring (and you would turn into a blob of black in the camera). But a white and navy floral dress, daughter in a jean jacket with a white skirt, dad in a navy button up with khakis and baby in a subtle striped onesie has balance and interest.
  4. Pick a color scheme that looks good with your decor. When you hang your photos on your wall, you don't want the colors you are wearing to distract. If your decor is neutral, you don't want to be wearing bright reds and oranges in your photos!
  5. Avoid logos and neon colors as they are distracting and can reflect colors on to skin that aren't natural.
  6. Figure out your clothes early! You can go shopping, borrow from friends or family, sift through your closets to find your outfits (you don't always have to spend money). But arranging everything early, making sure it's clean and fits will save the picture day stress!
